Great Things to See and Do on A Washington, DC, Bus Tour

Feb. 22, 2022

Washington DC is one of the most popular tourist sites in America, and for good reason! Washington, DC, bus tours from locations like Virginia and New York are cheap and comfortable, making it easy for you and your family to take a day trip or weekend to the nation's capitol whenever you like.

If you've never been to DC before, there's so much to see and do. Here are some of our favorite suggestions for families taking Washington DC bus tours!

Four Great Family-Friendly Stops When You're On A Washington, DC, Bus Tour

1 - President Lincoln's Cottage

The Lincoln Memorial is certainly spectacular, but it doesn't tell you much about Lincoln, the man.  For that, visit Lincoln's Cottage. It's a well-preserved location that tells you a lot about life in the 19th Century, with a fascinating tour all about Lincoln's life and accomplishments. The tour is kid-friendly, with hands-on activities they'll undoubtedly enjoy.

And speaking of Lincoln...

2 - Ford's Theater

Most infamous as the site of Lincoln's assassination, Ford's Theater is still operational and still putting on shows. If there's no show going on, you can tour the theater, as well as explore the attached museum.

On the other hand, if you do want to take in a show, be sure to order tickets ahead of time. They sell out quickly, and same-day tickets are hard to get.

3 - Mount Vernon

Another great day trip is to Mount Vernon, home of President George Washington and his wife throughout their later years. There are extensive tours here, as well as a new interactive experience called "Be Washington: It's Your Turn To Lead" that invites visitors to ponder the same challenges that Washington faced while in office.

Mount Vernon is a great historical time capsule and reflection on one of our greatest leaders.

4 - The White House Visitor's Center

Due to security concerns, getting tickets to actually tour the White House itself can be difficult – it’s not impossible, but it takes work and pre-planning. If you're pressed for time, just visit the Visitor's Center instead.  It's open to the public to walk in, and lets you still see a lot of the White House grounds and also take a virtual tour of the house itself.
