The Best Things to Do in NYC With Kids at Christmas
1. Check out the decorations
There are so many streets, shops, and homes that put up amazing displays that it would be almost impossible to list them all. These are some of our favorites:
- Fifth Avenue: This classic shopping district never fails to disappoint at Christmas, with both the street and the shops themselves decked out across the avenue. Saks 5th Ave, in particular, is a must-see.
- Rockefeller Plaza: Kids will always be amazed by the gigantic Christmas tree that goes up in the Plaza every year. Nearby Radio City also tends to have great decorations.
- FAO Schwarz: Of course one of the most famous toy shops in the world goes all-in on Christmas. That said, don’t go unless you’re ready to buy plenty of Christmas gifts for the kiddos.
2. Meet a Santa or Three
Your kids are going to want to meet Santa – maybe a few times – and there are plenty of great options.
- Macy’s Santaland is world-famous, seen in numerous movies, and easily the #1 option for meeting Santa – but be prepared for long lines. Fortunately, the decorations are so elaborate that you probably won’t mind.
- Bloomingdale’s also has a wonderful Santa’s Grotto, although depending on popularity, there may be a fee for booking on some days. Call ahead to check.
- Bryant Park gives you a two-fer, one of the most impressive Christmas trees aside from Rockefeller Plaza, and a Santa to visit!
3. Go Ice Skating
If your kids know how to skate, or you’re ready to teach them, this is another must-do when you’re in NYC with kids. And you’ll probably already be visiting some of these locations already. Both Rockefeller Plaza and Bryant Park have wonderful rinks set up, in full view of their Christmas trees. Or maybe check out the Wollman Rink in Central Park, for a different view.
4. See a Family-Friendly Christmas Show
Finally, any trip to New York is incomplete if you don’t take in at least one show – so make it something the whole family can enjoy! The Rockettes put on a family-friendly show for the holidays, recommended for children 6 and up. Or check out a production of The Nutcracker at the New York Children’s Theatre to introduce them to a classic.
